Bridging the gap between research and practice : using phenomenographic findings to develop training for career practitioners
2021
AbstractThis study contends that phenomenography offers both a useful research method and practical tools for developing education and training for career practitioners. After introducing the basic principles of phenomenography, the study reviews previous research on its potential in developing pedagogical practices. It explores how the phenomenographic findings were utilized to design an online skills training programme for career practitioners. The study finds that phenomenographic research serves three practical pedagogical purposes: (1) revealing how learners understand certain concepts or phenomena, (2) elucidating how these understandings differ; and (3) identifying critical aspects i…
Finnish and Greek early childhood teachers’ perspectives and practices in supporting children’s autonomy
2017
Kindergarten teachers from different cultural backgrounds attribute various meanings to children’s autonomy. There seems to be cultural differences in early childhood education curricula with regard to how a child’s autonomy is described and how it is supported. This qualitative study asks: how do teachers narrate their perspective and pedagogical support of children’s autonomy, and what kinds of similarities and differences in the pedagogy and practices can be found in Finnish and Greek early childhood education (ECEC) contexts? The data of this qualitative study consist of a semi-structured questionnaire of 14 kindergarten teachers and observations of their pedagogical practices in the da…

El Prácticum de Ciencias Sociales en dos Universidades Iberoamericanas
2019
Comparing the Effect Size of School Level Support on Teachers’ Technology Integration
2020
Teachers are expected to lead the innovative use of Information Communication and Technology (ICT) at the classroom level of context. However, research literature shows that a number of factors influence their ICT pedagogical practices. Therefore, the present study investigates the influence of school level support on teacher educators’ technology integration. A mixed method is used to collect data through three focused interviews (N = 19) and self-completion survey (N = 136). The data collected is analysed both qualitatively and quantitatively. The result shows support for the model hypothesized and suggests that the ICT pedagogical practices of the teacher educators do not predict their t…
THE ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF INCLUSIVE EDUCATION FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF FUTURE TEACHERS
2021
In Latvia, inclusive education is relevant as seen in the past several decades, during which time society has developed a more comprehensive understanding of and made significant progress towards implementing inclusive education. Nevertheless, there is still a gap between the priorities of education policy and reality in educational institutions. The quality of education accorded to students is informed by the knowledge, understanding and experience of teachers in the implementation of concepts of inclusive education. The current study aimed at identifying the visions of prospective teachers (already working in schools) concerning inclusive education. To explore the experiences of future te…
Assemblages of language, impact and research
2022
Three scholars—of languages and knowledges, of translation and writing, and of higher education—discuss societal impact as a higher education policy goal and the language ideologies that link with that discussion. We first criticize the problematic notion of impact that is common in higher education policy and discuss language and impact in terms of their assumed predictable, definable, and linear nature. From there, we move on to advocate for a multimodal, multidirectional, locally, and globally relevant impact that is focused on direct engagement, participatory approaches, support for promoting community activities, and introducing more epistemologically just understandings of the relatio…
RIED. Revista iberoamericana de educación a distancia
2015
Constructing a pedagogical practice across disciplines in pre-service teacher education
2019
In this paper we report a qualitative case study of a teaching intervention in which a pre-service subject teacher pair planned and conducted a course integrating Finnish language and ethics in a multilingual setting. Audio-recorded planning sessions and interviews including learning diaries were analysed using qualitative content analysis to identify the dynamics of collaborative cross-curricular pedagogical practice development and pedagogical language knowledge. The analysis revealed tensions in crossing the boundary between language and content knowledge. The study suggests that when creating cross-curricular practices, student teachers benefit from longer-term processes and theory-base…
